Synthetic materials

Gaskets in Roetzmeier Safety Containers are made of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a material from the group of fluorocarbons/fluorocarbon plastics. Colloquially, PTFE is also known as Teflon, the trade name of the company Dupont (U.S.). PTFE is ideal for the use in safety containers for the following reasons:

  • it is inert, i.e. only very few materials can break down the chemical structure of Teflon and cause a reaction
  • it has an extremely low surface tension and therefore is non-adhesive, i.e. there is almost no material that sticks to PTFE
  • it is highly resistant against nearly all chemical substances (instability may result only from strong reducers or strong oxidizing agents) - use our download list to check resistance for your substances
  • it does not burn, only very hot flames in red heat can cause degradation (which may lead to disposal of harmful smoke)

PFA (perflour-alkoxylalkane) is used for the content level indicators of our our safety barrels. PFA is a fluorocarbon as well and colloquially known as Teflon. For the resistance of PFA for specific media, please use also our list mentioned above resistance.

Some gaskets of our safety funnels are made of polyethylen (PE) or Alveocel. PE consists of hydrogen and carbon. It is characterized by a high resistance against acids, alkalis and other chemicals as well as high robustness, durability, elasticity and good glide. On each of our single product pages on this website you find information about the respective materials used.
